Fitting around a kitchen bar work top
Does anyone charge extra for working around a breakfast bar? I did one (18x18) this week and underestimated how much longer it took to do, and that was just setting out making sure they all met.

I started on Tuesday and was planning on finishing Friday but I lost loads of time along the way and as the customer had their underfloor heating off I thought it best to go in today (Sat) to finish it for them so they could get warm again.
Got there in the end and the customer was very happy although I did have to sacrifice my Saturday and the 6 nations!

Re: Fitting around a kitchen bar work top
18x18's
sounds like lvts to me allan
Dont normally add on extra for islands/breakfast bars etc
As you pointed out steve its the setting out that makes it
If its a particulary awkward sod then i would allow something for time added on, but if a straightfwd island then prob not
(im in the middle of doing 500x500 tiles and the 'islands' sotospeak are isles in a shop, 6oddmetres long and 800wide)
not too bad really
setting out is key

Re: Fitting around a kitchen bar work top
Yes, it was square lvts and the island was a wierd hexagonal type shape near the rest of the worktops and the tiles led into another room and a wc so had to include that in the setting out.
When you think about it, you're doing more cuts than 2 empty rooms when there's an island in the room (i think?)
I forgot my camera as usual but I have to go back Monday to pick up my roller so will take a couple snaps then.Last edited by gooner4life; 05-02-2012 at 09:26 AM.

Re: Fitting around a kitchen bar work top
I have fitted kitchen in karndean knight tile wood strip in big kitchen with breakfast island in middle of floor. If you have someone to help you and have eaten your weatabix that morning then they can usually be lifted up and can move it side to side!If it is breakfast bar that is attached to rest of kitchen units it might take more than weatabix to lift that!!!!!

Re: Fitting around a kitchen bar work top
No dude I dont charge extra for fitting round breakfast bars or island units even though it does add to the work .However if i'm fitting cushioned sheet vinyl i do charge a surcharge as often i need a pair of hands to stop the stuff ripping and hands cost the customer money rather than a rip costing me money!!

Re: Fitting around a kitchen bar work top
A lot of the new builds have the open plan kitchen dinner layouts, sometimes u have to try and spread out an 8 X 4m viynl through a 3ft gap between the breakfast bar and kitchen units, even when cut down roughly its very dificult.
Defo a 2 man job IMO.

Re: Fitting around a kitchen bar work top
I measure every job i fit so im lucky there , so if there is anything awkward i add a little bit more on .
The estimator from a shop should also add on a degree of difficulty sur charge for the fitter if its not straight forward as the fitter goes in jobs blind and doesnt know what to expect
